March Jobs
Garden Maintenance
There is something so incredibly motivating about March, Spring is just starting to appear, bulbs are poking there heads through the soil and everything feels like it’s just coming to life. I love this time of year, new and emerging possibilities around every corner. As the temperature is slowly starting to warm a little, this month is all about sowing seeds!
One of the other highlights of this month is that birds will be starting to think about nesting, so it’s always a good idea to not be too quick to tidy your garden, leave some debris for the birds.
Flower Power
You can get a head start on many flowers by sowing undercover, such as;
-
Ammi Majus
-
Petunia
-
Rudbeckia
-
Zinnia
And there are plenty more that you can even start sowing direct, like;
-
Cornflower
-
Lupin
-
Nigella
-
Scabious
Veg Plot
Start them off indoors on a window ledge or heated greenhouse (or if you’re like me...all those places and when you still run out of room you use the dining table too!)
-
Beetroot
-
Cauliflower
-
Chicory
-
Swiss Chard
-
Cucumbers
-
Kale
You can also start sowing direct (be mindful to check the nighttime temperatures and always give them a helping start by using a cloche to begin with);
-
Brussel Sprouts
-
Carrots
-
Leeks
-
Parsnips
Herbs
I love to grow herbs and now is a good month to get going, you can sow;
-
Basil
-
Lemon Balm
-
Oregano
-
Parsley
-
Sage
-
Coriander
Pruning
This is the last chance to prune your blueberries, however now is a good time to think about pruning Buddleja, summer flowering Clematis and Cornus.
